Every year hundreds of thousands of forints goes into the fight against graffiti. During the renovation in the city centre the Bocskai statue and the Memorial of Convicts had to be cleaned
from graffitis. The Police initiated 23 proceedings against people who made graffitis in 2009 in Debrecen.
Tagged and painted benches, pylons and graffiti pictures on the walls and underpasses. Cleaning the walls cost 300 – 400 thousand forints per year in Debrecen.
"The tags can also be posted on the occasion of a solitary walk on walls or benches. For a bigger project more people will be on scene.
The location was chosen to dominate, has to be highly visible in a busy place or it can lose all meaning. The site may therefore has to be difficult to access like a place higher up the top of buildings "says an active "painter".
The problem is that the number of graffiti cases cause harm to others, violate private property, in fact that we expect deterioration. The victims and witnesses may also file a complaint to the police and the punishment can be up to hundreds of thousands of Huf if police find clear evidence. However, this did not discourage the teams from painting.
"At first, it was just only funny pranks then after a time it became a rivalry between the teams. The inspiration can come from anything. One color, a shape, a word to either – if someone just has a good word to describe himself as a member."
